How to Get a Second Phone Number on Your Android Device
A second phone number can be an essential part of your everyday life, giving you a new way to handle customer service calls, helping you keep your social and work lives separate, or even just giving you another way to order pizza! If you’re an Android user, Textme lets you get that second number on your device with minimal hassle. Here’s how it works.
Go To Google Play Store
Google’s Play Store is one of my favorite sources for all things apps. I can search from my phone, tablet or computer and easily find what I’m looking for. From free games to productivity tools that cost upwards of $9.99, Google makes it easy to find high-quality applications for any need. The first step in getting another number is finding your phone’s app store by visiting its Google Play page . Once you land there, start typing Call me – until you see call with me pop up under suggested searches (it will be a sponsored link). Click on it and get it onto your device – they offer both a free trial and paid service; be sure to pick which one works best for you!
Type in textme
Textme makes it simple and easy to get a second phone number for your Android device. All you have to do is get Textme (the app) and sign up for an account. Once you’ve completed these tasks, all you have to do is text @textme in order to find out how to activate your new number. You can even choose from different numbers and plans depending on what works best for you—give it a try!
The app
The first step is getting Textme from Google Play (if you don’t already have it). It’s free, of course. Then, open up your app drawer and click on Textme. After that, click + New Phone Number. You’ll be asked to enter an area code and phone number and follow some basic prompts. When all that is said and done, you should have a new phone number added right there in your app!
Sign up with Google, Twitter, Facebook or text message
All of these services offer a secondary number for your personal use. The number can be based off your Gmail address, Twitter handle or Facebook profile. Many of these numbers are free and can be accessed by anyone with an Internet connection. If you choose not to link it up with social media sites, there are several apps that will provide you with second line numbers ranging from $2-$10/month. If your phone has an internet connection (even if it's just Wi-Fi), all you need is one app and you’re set! When it comes time to make calls, texts and data won’t be deducted from your existing carrier plan.
Add your contact details
To get started, you’ll need to register for TextMe and add your contact details. You will be asked for your first name, last name, phone number (this is where you can enter your cell number) and email address. Make sure to create an email address just for signing up with TextMe since you’ll use it as your username when creating a new second phone number. Once you’ve completed that step, hit continue and then choose an area code for your second number (the ones available are limited but most cities will have at least one). Next, pick whether or not you want caller ID blocking.
Check your phone and verify your phone number
You can do that by looking at your recent call history, checking your phone’s account settings, or doing a quick Google search for my phone number + [your carrier]. Once you know your number, you’ll be able to get started with adding a second line. Of course, not all carriers offer a second number; if yours doesn’t (or if it does but it costs too much), there are other ways to forward calls and texts. My personal favorite is Google Voice. It offers free forwarding numbers in many different area codes and supports simultaneous ringing so you can choose which device receives each call or text.
